We left the house around 7:30am and made the beautiful drive up US285, US84 and NM96. It took us about two hours to get to our destination. We turned off NM96 onto FR103 and parked a short distance up the road at the Continental Divide Trail.

So the clues to the first box had us head west on the trail. We walked for about a mile and a quarter and found the landmark we needed - two carins with a log between them on the left side of the trail. From there we followed the rest of the clues and found Second Saturday Seekers: S.C Shade by Dragon D's. I found a spot to sit so I could stamp in. Once done I replaced the box and we headed back the way we came. The hike was beautiful. Lots of wildflowers, especially lupine. The weather was also great - clear skies with a breeze, just perfect. We arrived back at the car and then headed out for the next box.

The next box was on FR76 and we had passed this road when we turned off NM96 onto FR103. So we just assumed and drove the one and a half miles to a two track road on the left side. We parked and hiked up the road only to have it peter out in a short distance. We looked around but nothing made sense and there wasn't anywhere to go, so we returned to the car. Then we left the car where we were parked and walked back along FR76 to another two track road we saw. This road went further and we did see some of the landmarks but then it didn't make sense and we didn't find the box. So we returned to the car and drove back to the beginning of FR76 and tried the mileage again - it took us to the same area. So then Thomas read the clues and noticed the first part of the clue said to turn onto FR76 around mile marker 17 in Gallina. Well, we had turned off of NM96 onto FR103 at mile marker 23 for the first box and just noticed that there was FR76 off of FR103 right there. Needless to say, WRONG spot! So we got back on NM96 and drove through Gallina to mile marker 17 and low and behold there was another turn for FR76. So we drove along FR76 for the one and a half miles and we arrived at a very clear dirt road heading up the hill. So we parked, gathered our things and headed up, and up and up. The clues stated to pass through a grove of pines and then pass a clearing of fallen trees and then make your way to the top of the hill. Then stand at the edge of the road, face the mountains and look for three rocks. Well, we miscalculated what was meant by the top of the hill and we ended up passing the location and kept climbing. We arrived at a spot and I noticed another landmark from the clues so we decided to give it a try and see if we were in the right spot. We left the road and walked through an area of lots of dead branches. I guess I wasn't paying attention and my foot caught on one of them and I tumbled onto both hands and forearms. Thankfully, I wasn't hurt bad just some scrapes along my left forearm. When I got up my arm was covered with blood and Thomas and I noticed that lots of the branches had parts sticking up and we realized how lucky I was - I could have been stabbed in the chest or stomach or my eyes. We decided we had probably gone too far and the weather was changing. It had gotten cloudy, windy and it looked like a storm was coming. I also needed to get back to the car to get some wipes to clean up my arm. So, we turned around and headed back down the road. I stopped to take a couple of pictures and decided to reread the clues. Then as we walked down I kept my eye out for a couple of the landmarks. I saw one of them which was 'a largish rock in between two standing tree trunks. So, I left the trail and cautiously walked over to the rock - then I followed the rest of the clues and found the box - Second Saturday Seekers: What'll Ya Have? by Dragon D's. I was so happy!!! I was so glad to find the box because I didn't want to go home empty handed after being injured. So I stamped in and replaced the box all the while the sky was getting darker and the wind had picked up. Once the box was in place we continued back to the car, moving pretty fast hoping to beat the rain. We arrived at the car dry and I grabbed some wipes and cleaned up my arm and then we headed out. When we turned onto NM96 the rain started and it came down hard all at once. Someone or something was looking out for us and let us get to the car before the deluge.

It was a good day, we found both boxes we looked for and for most of the time the weather was perfect. We also enjoyed the hikes - great spot and wonderful views.
We had tried to go then but the forest was closed at the time due to high fire danger and then after they reopened the forest we never found the time to get out there. So, we decided today was the day. We headed out around 8:00am and the drive took two hours. We arrived at mile marker 23 on NM96 just outside of Gallina and turned onto FR103. The clue told us to look for where the Continental Divide Trail crossed FR103. On our first pass we missed the trail and drove about five miles along the road never seeing a CDT sign. So we turned around and only a short distance from NM96 we found the trail. The sign was more on the side of the tree and we missed it from the direction we were heading at first but it was easily seen from our return direction. So we parked on the side of the road and followed the clues heading east on the trail.then the clue says "Cross an old dirt road, down and up 2 hills, and through a stile marked with a CDT tag. Cross 2 old dirt roads, down a hill then back up, past a large rock with an interesting cut out. Continue on, eventually walking down a rock path into the canyon. Pass the giant name rock and find the 6th stone cairn." It didn't give any distances. We ended up walking about two miles before we got to the 6th cairn. Thankfully, the trail is pretty level with only a few ups and downs that weren't that bad. Once at the 6th cairn it became a little cofusing. From here we had to take compass readings and steps four different times to get to the box. At first we weren't all that accurate because we were no where around the box. But we looked all the same. Then we returned to the cairn and started again. This time we were closer but still not where we needed to be. But instead of starting over we just decided to look at the picture provided and see if we could line up at the same angle - we did it and found NM Moose by Dragon D's. I sat and stamped in and the weather took a turn for the worse. The wind started blowing and clouds moved in fast. So I got the box back in place and we returned to the trail and headed back to the car. Remember, we have two miles to walk to get to the car. About five minutes into our walk it started to spritz, then that eventually turned into a steady drizzle. By the time we got to the car we were wet, not soaking, but still wet. Thankfully, the worst of the rain waited until we were in the car.

So we decided that this was the end of letterboxing for the day and we would come back in a few days. It ended up raining the entire way home. But we were still glad we got out and did a little hike. The area is beautiful and we are looking forward to finding the other boxes and seeing more of Gallina.
We have been out of both for a while now and we have been talking about taking a road trip to replenish our supply. So for the past two days I have been planning and mapping our letterboxes that we could get on this trip. We get our pecans in Fort Sumner and our peanuts in Portales. Today we finally got out and took care of everything.

We left the house early this morning, around 6:00am. We took I25 north to US285 heading south. Then we took I40 at Clines Corners and headed east. It was early and thankfully not much traffic on I40 (it is usually filled with lots of big rigs). I had clues of two boxes at two different rest areas off of I40 but we didn't look them because there were recent attempts without finds. So we made our first stop in Newkirk (about 25 miles east of Santa Rosa). We stopped at a gas station and found Fabiola Cabeza de Baca Gilbert by Quiet Place. Fabiola Cabeza de Baca Gilbert is credited with inventing the u-shaped taco shell. We found this box easily and I took it back to the car to stamp in. Then after replacing the box we backtracked to Santa Rosa. You can read about Newkirk at . . .

Newkirk Has Seen Better Times

Once in Santa Rosa we made our way to the Moise Memorial Library and looked for How Chile Came to New Mexico by Quiet Place. This was a quick and easy find and I stamped while sitting in the car. You can read about chile by getting the book How Chile Came to New Mexico by Rudolfo Anaya. After getting this box back in place we headed to St. Rose of Lima Chapel and more specifically the old ruins. We drove past the church and stopped just after the bridge on 3rd St. just after crossing the bridge over El Rito Creek. Here we found Saint Rose by Quiet Place. After finding these two boxes we decided to get some breakfast. We ended up at Route 66 Restaurant and had a nice meal - smothered breakfast burrito and huevos rancheros.

After breakfast it was time to move on and we headed south on US84 to Fort Sumner. Our first stop was at the Fort Sumner Cemetery. As we approached the cemetery we noticed (and loved) the beautiful old, arched, stone wall. Here we looked for Fort Sumner by Quiet Place. This is a two box series and we had no trouble finding both boxes. After stamping in and then replacing the boxes we were ready to head to our next location. We made our way to Old Fort Sumner Cemetery where Billy the Kid is buried. Here we looked for and found Wanted Dead or Alive by ArnoldZiffel. This was an easy find and there was a nearby picnic table that I sat at to stamp in. When it came time to replace the box I had to wait for a couple of people to leave the area. Then on to one last box in Fort Sumner. We had to find a Route US60 East sign and a guardrail. We found the spot and the clue said at the end of the guardrail. So we drove to the end and looked - no box. So we went back to the beginning of the guardrail and found the box - FORAYCH Goes to L&B in Texas: New Mexico by FORAYCH. I stamped in while sitting in the car. It was kind of uncomfortable being on the side of a very busy road. But now that we were done with the letterboxes in Fort Sumner we went to get our pecans. The people we get our pecans from worked with Thomas years ago. We bought 17 pounds of pecans for the freezer so we are set for a while. Now it was time to keep going to our next stop.

We drove from Fort Sumner to Clovis on US60 and when we arrived in Clovis we found Norman Petty Studios. Here we looked for and found Recording Roy by Quiet Place. After stamping in and replacing the box we left Clovis and headed for Portales on US70.

As we got into Portales we stopped at Hampton Farms store to get our peanuts. We buy a 50 pound bag of shelled peanuts. Then at home we peel and freeze them. Then we have peanuts that we can oven roast or use to make peanut brittle. With that done we went in search of a couple of letterboxes. The first box we looked for was Taco Box by Quiet Place. This box is located at the Taco Box restaurant. I was a little worried about looking for the box because it is right out in the open. I think I was being sneaky enough but who knows. I found the box and brought it to the car to stamp in. Once that box was back in place we drove a short distance down the road to Eastern New Mexico University to look for He's Not From Around Here by Quiet Place. This box is also in a very exposed place - at the sign for the university near the Roosevelt County Museum. The sign is facing the road which is very busy. Again I tried to be sneaky but you can't always tell if someone is watching. I nabbed the box and took it back ti the car and stamped in. After putting the box back in place we continued on our road trip.

We continued on US70 in a southwesterly direction and after an hour we arrived at Acme. There isn't anything there except the Old Frazier School (and that is part of Frazier not Acme). Anyway, we stopped at the old school and looked for Wile E. Coyote in Acme by Quiet Place. This was an easy find and once I had stamped in and replaced the box I walked around and took a few pictures. Then we finished the drive on US70 to US285. We were just about five miles north of Roswell. We continued our drive north on US285.

About 50 miles north of Roswell we turned onto NM247 and headed west. We drove 48 miles to Corona. Once in Corona we turned onto US54 and in a short distance onto NM42. We then found the 'Welcome to Corona' sign which is only a short distance from US54 on NM42. The sign is in Sloan-Simpson Park. There are a few picnic tables and a fishing pond. It was actually a nice, relaxing area. I went in search of Corona, NEW Mexico by ArnoldZiffel. Once I found the box I took it to one of the picnic tables to stamp in. Then once the box was replaced we made our way back to US54.

We drove 20 miles on US54 to the intersection of NM3 in Duran. There is a pullout near this intersection and across US54 from the pullout is the old, abandoned William Hindi store. Here in Duran I looked for Her Name is Rio by Quiet Place. The box is hidden on the side of the store and I found it easily. I had my things with me so I found a spot to sit and stamp in. When done I replaced the box and returned to the car across the street.

From Duran we took NM3 north to US285 at Encino. And from there we headed back to Santa Fe. We had an incredible day and as we got close to El Dorado we were treated to an amazing sunset. Stats for the day . . . 50 pounds of peanuts, 17 pounds of pecans, 13 letterboxes, 8 cities/towns, 14 hours and 600 miles. I really love these road trips.
So I planned to head out today and try and find them. I left the house with clues for five boxes, let's see what happens.

I headed out and my first stop was Museum Hill. I was here looking for Pablo and Vincent both by ArnoldZiffel. I followed the clues and easily found both boxes - they were planted close to each other. I used the bench in the clues to sit and stamp in. Both are great stamps and once I finished stamping and put the boxes back in place I decided to walk around a bit and see what outdoor art they had. It has been a while since I have been to the Hill. I spent about 30 minutes walking around and taking pictures then I returned to the car to continue on with me day.

My next stop was Meow Wolf to look for Cat at the Anomaly by hartwolfzell. Finding this box proved to be more of a challenge as there were quite a few cars in the parking lot and about 15 people milling around. There are large sculptures in the parking lot and people were taking pictures. I sat at a picnic table and waited. Then when the people moved away from the area I quickly moved over to the spot where the box was hidden and nabbed it. I went back to the picnic table to stamp in. Thankfully, when I went back to replace the box no one was around. Afterward I took a few pictures and then left to the next location.

The place I went to next is a brewery off of Cerrillos Road. I parked on the side of the street near the brewery and started to walk to the area the clues said to go. But I ended up going back to the car. There were three people unloading a truck and I didn't want to be questioned about snooping around the area. The box I was going to look for was Spring Break Flower by hartwolfzell. I decided to move on and maybe come back later to try again.

So I had one more box to find. The last box was Every Dog Has His Day: Scottie by Yaateeh. My search for this box took me to Frank S. Ortiz dog park. I followed the clues and took a walk along a trail leading away from a playground. When I arrived at the box's hiding spot I had to wait a few minutes as three people came by walking their dogs and decided to stop and chat right where I was. When they finally left I grabbed the box and moved to a different spot to sit and stamp in. When I went to put the box back in place luckily there was no one around and it was easy. I then returned to my car to head home.

I enjoyed the morning letterboxing in Santa Fe and found four really nice stamps - thanks to all who planted.Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05828354153419685423noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33779821.post-24053647297073602162019-04-09T20:27:00.000-06:002019-06-09T20:49:03.263-06:00Letterboxing in LeominsterWe are back from Malta and we are spending a couple of days with our friends in Leominster. Today we hung out and visited and we ran errands and we also decided to go out and look for a series of letterboxes.

Deanne printed out the clues for Nightmare Before Christmas by Majical. This is a series of six boxes placed at Doyle Conservation Area. Once we parked we followed the clues and headed down one of the trails. We looked for the first box and didn't have any luck so we moved on to the second box. We found the next four - Jack, Oogie Boogie, Zero and Sally. Then when we looked for the last box we didn't have any luck with this one. So we ended up finding four of the six boxes.

It was a beautiful place with some nice trails and we enjoyed our outing even though it was a bit cold. It was good to get out and find a few letterboxes during our travel - which you can read about at Our Maltese Adventure.Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05828354153419685423noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33779821.post-71493426463169695752019-04-05T21:07:00.000-06:002019-06-10T17:15:27.171-06:00A New Letterbox in MaltaWe are still in Malta and the friends we are traveling with are also letterboxers. Two days ago they planted a new letterbox in Birgu. Today we all went to Mdina and Rabat. You can read about that at Our Maltese Adventure. But for the letterbox Thomas and I went out on our own. We spent most of the day in Mdina and Rabat and when we returned to Birgu Thomas and I got off the bus at the first stop.

So we followed the clues they gave us and went to an open area with a trail to find the box. We followed the trail for about a quarter of a mile until we reached a stone wall. And then the clue mentioned a tree pointing to the hiding spot of the box. The clues were dead on and I found From Massachusetts to Malta by lazyletterboxer. I stamped in and then replaced the box. From here we walked back to the apartment.

So, I found two boxes on the small island of Malta. Another country I can add to my list.Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05828354153419685423noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33779821.post-76209600725224409122019-04-02T21:57:00.000-06:002019-06-08T14:08:17.640-06:00One Letterbox on Malta: FoundYesterday we tried for this letterbox but didn't have any luck. So today we were in the same area and we decided to give it another try. We made our way to Herbert Ganado Gardens. This time we were by ourselves so it was a much more relaxed search. We entered the gardens where the clue noted and then we found a spot to sit and I read the entire clue a couple of times to get my bearings. I noted a couple of landmarks so we walked over to them and then looked for the next landmark. We moved over to that one and then we had to wait. There was a man sitting on one of the benches and he never took his eye off of us. So I sat near where I thought the box was and just looked over to the spot to see if I could see where the box was. I wasn't having any luck. Finally, after about 15 minutes the man left and we could do a proper search. The letterbox we were looking for is More Memories of Malta by wandaandpete. This box is only a stamp glued to a rock. So I turned over about four rocks before I found the stamp. I took it to one of the benches to sit and stamp in. There was no one around when I went to put it back in place. I tried to locate the exact spot mentioned in the clue and I tried to place it under another rock described in the clue. I found a rock but it wasn't exactly as mentioned in the clue but it would work and make sure the stamp was hidden well. I am glad we got back to find this box and now I have another country on my list. You can read about the rest of our day at Our Maltese Adventure.Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05828354153419685423noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33779821.post-61595765317304696512019-04-01T21:24:00.000-06:002019-06-08T14:09:16.896-06:00One Letterbox on MaltaWe are on a trip to Malta and I found a clue for one letterbox. The box is located in Valletta. Today we had planned to spend the day exploring Valletta and you can read about that at A Day in Valletta. But for the letterbox we followed the clues (on a map) and found Crucifix Hill and the Kalkara Steps which lead us to the Herbert Ganado Gardens. Once in the garden we looked for More Memories of Malta by wandaandpete. But the clues got confusing in the garden. We looked in a couple of spots but we couldn't find the box. I was trying to read the clues and get my bearings but the others didn't seem to want to spend any time looking. So we decided to quit looking and move on with our day. I don't think we looked in the right spot and I just needed some more time. Thomas and I will come back another day and give it another try on our own. You can read about the rest of our trip at Our Maltese Adventure. Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05828354153419685423noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33779821.post-4162156395038772852019-02-11T22:38:00.000-07:002019-02-11T22:38:05.860-07:00Windy Albuquerque LetterboxingAfter the event in Tucson I have been wanting to get out and do more letterboxing. There have been lots of boxes planted in Albuquerque that I haven't gotten yet and I decided I needed to get out today and find a few of them. I also wanted to go and scout some locations for possible letterboxes I want to plant. So this morning I gathered my things and headed south. When I left Santa Fe it was 29° and it was snowing - I checked the Albuquerque weather and it didn't look like they were getting snow. It snowed until I got to La Bajada and then it was clear - until I got to Santo Domingo. The snow started again and continued until I reached San Felipe and then it cleared again. It stayed clear the rest of the way to Albuquerque. I went to a couple of places and looked for possible places to hide letterboxes - it was pretty cold while I was walking around - not sure what the temperature was but it was cold enough to make me hurry my little butt along. So after about an hour and a half of checking out a couple of areas I decided to go and look for a few boxes.

The first box I looked for was Friendship Lei by gs10530. I went to the park and followed the clues. At first I was a little confused and looked in the wrong area but then I got my bearings and headed in the right direction. As I was walking along I kept my eye out for a SPOR by the cinder block wall. I found the spot, well, I actually saw the box. It was sitting out and had two small rock sitting on top of it. As I headed to get it a woman came out of a gate in the wall about 10 feet from where the box was. She was walking her dog and so I just kept walking. I then took another path and headed back in the direction of the box. The woman kept watching me as I walked around. Finally, she headed back to her gate and so I walked around and headed toward the box. But as I approached I saw her standing by the wall watching me. So, again I couldn't get the box. She kept staring and watching so I walked over to her and asked if there was a problem. She said "No!". So I asked why she was staring at me and if I was trespassing and if the park was private and only for the use of the people living around the park. She again said "No!" So I asked her to quit staring and watching me and told her she was creeping me out. She didn't say anything but she stayed standing at the wall watching me. So I sat on a near by bench and watched her. She eventually went inside her house but by this time I decided it was time to leave and if I tried to get the box she would probably be watching me from her window. So I returned to my car and headed to another location.

My next stop was Sunset Memorial Park to look for Maxie Had Moxie by Silver Eagle. I followed the clues and easily found the box. The box has been there since September but it turned out that I was the first finder. It was still a little cold and it had gotten windy. I was lucky because there was a was that helped block the wind while I stamped in. Then I put the box back into place and was ready for the next location. So from this cemetery I headed to another cemetery. This time I went to Fairview Memorial Park to find another Silver Eagle box - The Deputy Sheriff. This was another quick and easy find and this time I stamped in while sitting in the car. After returning the box back to its hiding spot I moved on. The next box brought me to the 66 Diner. I parked in the lot and read the clue - which is actually pictures. I was a little nervous and walking around trying to find the box as there are windows looking out and there were quite a few people inside that might see me stalking around the building. So from the car I scoped things out and was pretty sure I had eyed the hiding spot. So I took out my phone and pretended to talk while I walked around and reached for the box. Thankfully, I found it on the first try and took it back to the car. After stamping in I began worrying again about putting it back and having someone inside seeing me. But I pretended with the phone again and put it back and then I decided to head inside and get a milk shake. While I waited for the shake I looked around and realized that most of the people weren't even looking out the windows and that it wasn't that easy to see the hiding spot from inside and sitting down. Oh well - it was done and all was good.

So I found three boxes today and had a nice time. I also may have found at least one good place for a box - we will have to see. Now I was ready to head home. But I will have to get to Albuquerque again soon because there are still a few more boxes to find. Maybe at the end of the week.Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05828354153419685423noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33779821.post-50250943243854249952019-02-03T19:07:00.000-07:002019-02-11T19:26:09.314-07:00It Was a Wild and Fun Rodeo! We are home from our six day letterboxing trip. We had a great time and really enjoyed the 15th Annual Tucson Gathering: Rodeo! at Catalina State Park. The event was fun and it was nice to see old letterboxing friends and to meet some new ones as well. There were lots of great boxes and stamps and I enjoyed the hiking and hunting. The park is beautiful with many miles of trails and incredible views of the Catalina Mountains. Wisconsin Hiker and Martini Man put on a great event and were the perfect hosts. During the trip Thomas and I hiked a little over 40 miles in those six days and we found 75 boxes. Besides the big event on Saturday we also enjoyed the NPTC Western Meet-up and the Padre Kino's Quest at Tumacácori National Historic Site. We will also be attending Padre Kino's Quest on Friday (the day before the annual event) at Tumacácori National Historical Park about an hour south of Tucson. Besides the two event days we will have two other days to just letterbox around Tucson. I always have fun in Tucson and always find great boxes - I am really looking forward to this trip. So that was our first priority. And then near there was another box that I could find. Thomas and I left our house around 8:00am and drove to the National Cemetery. Thankfully, there was no one around and it was a quick errand. Next, we headed toward Tesuque. We took the exit off of US285 headed toward Tesuque Village and almost immediately stopped at a pullout. Here we looked for On Our Way to Great Wolf Lodge, Colorado Springs, Colorado - Wandering Wolf by The Rodriguez Family. This was a quick and easy find. I stamped in the car and then put the box back in place. We were now done with Santa Fe and we could move on to Albuquerque.

Once we arrived in Albuquerque we made our way to Los Altos Park and the Albuquerque Garden Center. Here we looked for and found Florabunda by Kit. The box is hidden near a bench and it was the perfect spot to sit and stamp. When I was done stamping and the box was back in place we headed on to the next box.

From Los Altos Park we took I40 to Tramway and then took Central headed east and stopped at the Route 66 Open Space (was the site of Little Beaver Town). We followed the clues for Red Ryder by Wronghat. We did fine until we got to his "word play" part of the clue. It took us a little while to work out the clue but we eventually found the box. There are some concrete slabs where I took the box to sit and stamp in. Then I replaced the box and we were ready to go to our next destination.

We had plans to meet another letterboxer for lunch in ABQ Uptown. So we made our way to the Elephant Bar to meet Kit for a relaxing lunch. We had a nice visit with Kit and a delicious meal and it was a nice addition to our letterboxing day. When lunch was finished we decided to call it a day and head back to Santa Fe. Over the last two days I found six wonderful letterboxes - thanks to all who planted them.Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05828354153419685423noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33779821.post-88937047280141447262018-09-07T20:02:00.000-06:002018-09-09T14:51:12.149-06:00An Afternoon of Boxing in Santa FeIn the last month a few new boxes have popped up in Santa Fe. So today I decided that after running errands I would go out to find these boxes. I got all the clues and mapped out a plan. I then ran all my errands and then had the rest of the day to letterbox.

First box was one off of Delgado Street. I found a place to park and then followed the clues. It was a quick walk and I easily found A Happy California Cow Mooves to Santa Fe by Wendy. After getting the box I found a good place to sit and stamp in. I was the first finder on this box. When I went to put the box back in place I had to wait a few minutes because all of a sudden there was quite a bit of traffic. Finally, the area cleared and I got the box back in it's hiding spot. Now I could head to the next box.

I drove up Hyde Park Road and parked at a pullout for the Little Tesuque Trail. Here I went in search of A Gift From Texas by The Huntress. This box is only a short distance down the trail and of course when I got to the spot there was a woman sitting about 20 feet away. So I walked past her and took some pictures. Luckily, she only stayed a few minutes. I then quickly found the box and took it down the trail to a rock where I could sit and stamp in. Then while I was stamping in (which was about 10 yards off the trail) two different people stopped to ask me what I was doing - very nosy. After stamping in I was able to rehide the box without a problem and then continue on to the next box.

From Hyde Park Road I headed to the National Cemetery. Once I arrived at the cemetery I went in search of USAF Brat Series New Mexico #7 by Flutter Fairy. I arrived at the spot and parked. There were three men (looked like workers) just standing in area, not working, just talking. So I took out my phone and pretended to text and walked around them to the hiding spot. From this spot I couldn't see the men so I guessed that they couldn't see me and I found the box. I took it back to the car to stamp in. The entire time I was stamping in the men didn't move. They just stood there talking. I didn't want to go put the box back in place because I didn't want them to get suspicious. So I decided to go visit Thomas' parents grave. About 20 minutes later I returned to the area to rehide the box and guess what - the men were still there and they had moved closer to where the box was hidden. Now I really couldn't put it back. So I found a bench and sat and played on my phone for another 20 minutes and they still didn't leave. I was so mad, first that my tax dollars were paying these guys to stand around and talk for almost an hour without doing any work and second that I couldn't put the box back in place. I finally decided to take it home and come back in the morning to hide it.

So I called it a day and headed home. There was still one more box I wanted to find but I had wasted too much time at the cemetery I decided I would get it tomorrow. Even with these men blocking my way I still had a great time letterboxing. And I will do a little more tomorrow.Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05828354153419685423noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33779821.post-73254011240445694502018-07-26T18:42:00.000-06:002018-07-26T18:42:10.894-06:00Heading to Disney Mania in ColoradoIn about a week I am heading up to Colorado to attend the Disney Mania Colorado Style letterboxing event in Parker. The event is being hosted by The Woodshed and is boasting about 470 boxes. The boxes are divided into series with different Disney themes, they will be hidden in three different locations and will be available for three days over a long weekend. The Woodshed has planned two nights of night boxing with a dinner of pizza on one night and BBQ then other night. I have attend a few other events hosted by The Woodshed and they are always fun. I am really looking forward to the event and if you want to read about my trip to Colorado go to Disney Mania Letterboxing in Colorado. Hopefully, I will be able to write a post each evening but with so many boxes I may get behind a little.Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05828354153419685423noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33779821.post-50554186220005058622018-07-21T22:28:00.000-06:002018-07-22T19:16:02.888-06:00Taos and the Enchanted CircleWhile having coffee this morning we decided we needed to get out of the house today and do something. So we made a decision to head up to Taos and do some letterboxing. We got things together and jumped into the car and headed out. The drive up to Taos was uneventful and we didn't stop for anything. When we arrived in Taos we turned onto NM585 and made our way to US64 and began our journey on the Enchanted Circle. Then we just drove until we arrived in Angel Fire.

Once in Angel Fire we began letterboxing. Our first stop was at the Oeste Vista Trail. Here we were looking for Angel Fire, New Mexico by KAT. We only had to walk a short distance up the trail to find the box. I found a nice log to sit on to stamp in. Once we were done and I had replaced the box we walked a little further on the trail and enjoyed the area. The trail is a 2.5 mile loop and we didn't do the hike today. We had other plans, so after finding the box we headed out to continue on our trip. Next we took a drive up Back Basin Road to find Wheeler Peak in Autumn by Texas Wanderers. A nice short drive led us to a pullout where we easily found the box. I stamped in while sitting in the shade under a tree - by this time it was really warming up. After replacing the box we drove back into Angel Fire and then headed to Moreno Valley High School. Here we looked for a series of five boxes - MVHS by MVHS. We assumed that the school (or students) placed these boxes. The only clue given was "To get started on this adventure around our school, look for metal that you can pedal." and when we pulled up at the school the clue was obvious. So we walked up to the sculpture and found an empty container (and the lid was missing). It was tied to a sculpture but there was nothing but the bottom of the container. We also assumed that the first box held the clue for the second box and so forth. But since the first box was empty we had nothing to go on. But we decided to look around again assuming that the boxes were similar to the first one and tied to something. So we started walking. Thomas found a box (Box #3) near a school bus and when he opened it found that it was Box #2 and inside was a stamp (carved on the end of a wine cork), a logbook and a clue to the next box. So after stamping in to this box we then followed the clues to the third box. And we found this one with another clue. From here we had problems - there was no sign of the next box (Box #4). We scanned the area but we didn't see anything that stood out to us. We ended up separating and just looking around. After about five minutes Thomas found another box which we assumed to be Box #5. In this box there was notes. One that talked about the boxes and one with another clue and said something about Box #6. But the LbNA listing only noted five boxes. It became a little confusing. We ended spending another 15 minutes walking around to see if we could find any more boxes but came up empty. We found three of the five boxes. I think this may have been a project of one of the students, but not sure. The three stamps found were all carved out of the end of wine corks - crude but interesting. Now it was time to continue on with our day.

Back on US64, we headed to NM38 and eventually made it to Red River. In Red River we parked near the Platinum Lift where the Nature Trail starts. The box here was Howdy Kitty in red River by Origami Hen. We followed the clues and found all the landmarks but didn't find the box. We did the clues twice and still no box. I think we were in the right spot but who knows - the box may be there and we just missed it. We left Red River and headed to Taos - NM38 to NM522.

In Taos, we made our way to Sierra Vista Cemetery. I followed the clues and quickly found Buck Dunton by Silver Eagle. After stamping in and replacing the box we headed out to look for a second box by Silver Eagle - Hangman Game 135. I won't talk about where this box is hidden because it is a mystery. But I can say that it was another easy find. After stamping in and getting the box back into its hiding spot we decided on one last box - this one in Tres Piedras.

On the way out of Taos we stopped at the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge (I always like walking out and seeing the view of the river and canyon below). We also went to the rest area and walked out on the West Rim Trail to see the spectacular view of the bridge over the canyon. Then we finished the drive to Tres Piedras. We made our way to the Ranger Station and here we found Aldo and the Wolves by ArnoldZiffel. I easily found the box and took it to the car to stamp in. It was a beautifully carved stamp. Once the box was back in its hiding spot it was time for us to head home.

On the way home we stopped in Espanola for some dinner. We ended up eating at La Cocina and had a great meal. Today was a perfect spur of the moment trip and we had a great time and found some wonderful letterboxes.
We did a ridiculous amount of things. You can see our list of things we did and saw at Dakota Trip Stats. If you are interested in reading about our trip you can go to A Monumental Letterboxing Trip. This was our first trip to the Dakotas and there were three states I needed to find letterboxes in (North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska) to add to my letterboxing map. And we completed that quest - I can now add them to my map and now I only need three states (Virginia, West Virginia and Hawaii) to have letterboxed in all 50 states. This particular trip was amazing and I loved everywhere we went - this is an amazingly beautiful country and I so enjoy exploring it. Between everything we did I was able to find 35 letterboxes on this trip and now I am 38 boxes shy of 5000 - another big letterboxing milestone.
Sunshine, no wind, temperature in the 70s. So I decided to take a drive up Hyde Park Road to check on a couple of my boxes. I drove up to the Aspen Vista Picnic Area. This area has a picnic area and is the start of the Aspen Vista Trail and the Alamo Vista Trail. I stopped here to check on my Trembling Poplar letterbox. It is approximately 300 steps up the Alamo Vista Trail. I walked slowly up the trail (and it is all uphill) to the area where the box is hidden. For me it is easy to find this spot because the trail levels out a bit and there is one large ponderosa pine tucked in with all the tall aspens. The box isn't hidden at the pine, it is to the left of the pine but using the pine as a landmark works well. I am happy to report that 'ALL' is well with this box. So I returned to my car and headed back down the mountain.

Next I stopped and parked on the side of the road for the Little Tesuque Trail. On this trail I have my Southwest Charm letterbox. I had a couple of reports about this box and wanted to check it out myself and see what needed to be done. So I walked along the trail and found the main box for the series. I was surprised and happy to find that the box was there and in good shape. When I opened the box I found the stamp and logbook but there was no ziplock bag. Thankfully, inside the box was completely dry and that means the logbook was also dry. Unfortunately, I didn't have a baggie so I will have to go back and fix that. From this box I went to check on the charms. I had a note that one of them was missing. I found five of the charms and one was missing. I found an empty film canister but couldn't find the stamp anywhere. I decided I wanted to hide these differently. So I have taken all the charms and marked the clues as unavailable. I need to recarve one of the charms and then decide how to rehide them. I am hoping to get this done in the next couple of days.

It was nice to get out and hit the trails. I need to do more of this and check on my boxes and get them up to date.
So we decided to take a drive and look for a letterbox. So we left home and headed south on NM14 - the Turquoise Trail. We drove past Cerrillos and through Madrid and ended up in Golden.

In Golden, we made our way to San Francisco de Asis Catholic Church.

We parked in front of the gates and wall surrounding the church and small cemetery. I then read the clues for a letterbox hidden near the church. Following the clues I easily found Golden by Kit. I brought the box back to the car to stamp in. I was happy to find that I was the first finder on this box. The carving is excellent and I really enjoyed finding this box - thanks Kit. After stamping in I got the box back into its hiding spot.

Then I wanted to see the church. But the gates into the cemetery and church were locked. So all I could do was take a few pictures through the gate. After that we decided to head back to Santa Fe. When we arrived in Madrid we decided to stop and walk around a bit. After about 30 minutes of strolling the area we stopped in at Jezebel's Soda Fountain/Deli which is located in Jezebel Studio, Gallery and Sculpture Garden. Here we got some ice cream and looked around the gallery. After another 30 minutes we decided to call it a day and head home.

We enjoyed our drive along the Turquoise Trail and enjoyed finding a wonderful letterbox. Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05828354153419685423noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33779821.post-72157815777328575002018-04-14T14:40:00.000-06:002018-04-15T18:04:14.603-06:00A Loop Around the Gila WildernessOn Thursday, Thomas emailed me from work and said he wanted to take Friday off and asked if I wanted to take a road trip and do some letterboxing. No thinking about it needed - I was ready to go. We decided on a trip to the Gila Wilderness area. More specific - Mogollon, Reserve and Silver City. So I spent Thursday afternoon mapping things out and getting ready. We decided to spend the night in Silver City so I booked a hotel and packed everything. Yesterday morning we were up early and on the road by 6:00am. Leaving this early got us through Albuquerque before the morning commute. When we got to Socorro we stopped at El Camino Restaurant & Lounge for some breakfast and coffee. After a nice relaxing and delicious meal it was time to get serious about some letterboxes.

We continued our trip on US60 and drove west to Datil. In Datil we turned onto NM12 and headed southwest and made our first stop at a circle drive near the elementary school. I followed the clues for Datil Dog by Kit and easily found the box. It was a bit chilly so I took the box back to the car to stamp in. I was the first finder for the box and I got a nice patch. After stamping in and replacing the box we continued our drive down NM12. Somewhere in the vicinity of Old Horse Springs we stopped at the Continental Divide Trail kiosk and looked for Schism at Nag's Fonts by Wronghat. Another easy find and I again stamped in while sitting in the car. The wind out there was terrible. I was the first finder on this box and I got a First Finder card/LTC. I replaced the box and we continued our drive and eventually made it to Reserve. In Reserve we stopped and got a snack and some gas at Black Gold Emporium. Then we found the Elfego Baca statue and looked for Desperado by Wronghat. Finding this box took some time. First, there were two sheriff deputies standing near the statue. After they left I started my search. I had to really work hard to interpret the clues. After about fifteen minutes I had an 'Aha!' moment and found the box. I stamped in and then replaced the box. Happy to have found this one - and I was the first finder, again - three first finders today! We left Reserve still driving on NM12 and when we reached the junction of US180 we stopped at the historic marker for Reserve. Here I looked for and found Reserve by Sunny Delight. Another quick and easy find and before long we were back on the road. We continued our drive on US180 heading in a southernly direction to Alma. We turned off of US180 and onto Mineral Creek Road. We drove the well maintained gravel road for about five miles to the tomb of Army Sergeant James C. Cooney. There was a letterbox at the tomb but I had heard it was missing but I decided I wanted to see the tomb anyway so we made the drive and looked for the box just in case. We didn't find Cooney's Tomb by Sunny Delight but it was interesting seeing the tomb and other gravesites behind it. We also drove to the end of the road (just a short distance from the tomb) to the Mineral Creek Trailhead. It was a beautiful drive and we are glad we took the detour. After our visit we made our way back to US180 and continued to NM159. We followed NM159 to Mogollon. The first four miles of the road are good and two definite lanes. After mile four the road narrows to a little more that one lane and in spots is degrading. It is also a very winding road and it took us some time to reach Mogollon. Once in the [ghost] town we turned and traveled up Fanny Road. This road was extremely bumpy with lots of rocks. Glad we were in a high clearance vehicle. A short way up the road we encountered a fallen tree across the road. So we stopped and got out of the truck and moved it off to the side and then continued to our destination. We traveled about .8 miles up this road to a stone structure in ruins. Here we found SAGE (Save a Galgo Español) by Dawgdok - another first find for me. I stamped in and then replaced the box and we took our return trip back down Fanny Road. Once back in the town we parked and walked around a bit, not much to see but I am glad we made the trip - this was on my New Mexico bucket list. We left Mogollon and drove back to US180 and then made our way to Glenwood and NM174. We took NM174 for five miles to The Catwalk National Recreation Area. (Another place on my New Mexico bucket list.) We parked and paid our fee and then headed out to explore the area. First, we wanted to look for two letterboxes. I followed the clues for The Cat Who Came to Breakfast by Silver Eagle. This box was placed nine years ago and the area has had some problems (fire, flash floods) so it may have changed a bit and I had problems with the clues and didn't find this box. The second box we looked for was The Catwalk by Twinville Trekkers. We followed the clues and when we got to the end of the catwalk and went down the stairs we couldn't cross the creek. Too much water and we didn't have any other socks or shoes to change into if we got wet, so we didn't look for this box. We made our way back up the stairs to the catwalk and tooks some time to walk around and enjoy the area. Now, it was time to hide two boxes I had brought with us. So we started at the beginning of the trail and placed a two box series - Catwalk. Once these two boxes were in place and I had made notes so I could write the clues later we headed back to the car and made our way back to US180.
We now headed for Silver City. We had about an hours drive and just before we got to town we stopped at the Continental Divide to find Continental Bisect by Wronghat. A quick drive-by box and once I had stamped in and replaced the box we continued on. We took the Truck Bypass Road to get to NM90. On NM90 we headed south to White Signal. A little south of White Signal we turned onto Chisom Trail and found the trail marker for the Jack's Peak Trailhead. Here we found Continental Divide Trail by Wronghat. I sat and stamped in and realized it was getting cold and the wind had picked up again. So I hurried along and got the box back in place and walked back to the car. We decided it was time to call it a day since it was 6:00pm and we were both getting hungry. We had only had breakfast and a snack all day. We drove back to Silver City and went to Vicki's Eatery. We shared spaghetti and meatballs and a small pizza. It was nice to sit and relax out of the wind. We had a delicious meal and talked about a great day of driving and boxing. We went to three places we had never been before - Cooney's Tomb, Mogollon and the Catwalk. An excellent day - we looked for ten boxes, found seven boxes and planted two boxes!
Now it was time to head for the hotel. First order of business was to take showers. After that was done I logged in my finds and my new plants. We were both tired so we turned off the lights and went to sleep.

This morning we were up early, again! There was one more box to find and then we needed to be in Albuquerque by 2:00pm. So we got our things packed and into the car, checked out of the hotel and headed out. A short distance from our hotel we stopped at the Dragonfly Trailhead to look for Dragonfly by Dawgdok. This was a quick and easy find and in a short time we were heading home. We drove back along NM152 through Emory Pass, Hillsboro and Kingston to I25. It was a beautiful morning drive. No traffic, peaceful and quiet. Once on I25 we stopped in Truth of Consequences to fill the truck with gas and then decided to have some breakfast. We ended up at Hodges Corner Restaurant in Elephant Butte. After eating and relaxing a bit we got back on the road to Albuquerque. Once in Albuquerque we headed to UNM and Popejoy Hall. We had tickets to see The Book of Mormon and we were going to the matinee at 2:00pm. We made it with an hour to spare.
We enjoyed the play (we have seen it before a few years ago), it is funny and entertaining. After the play and once we were back in the car we both realized we were tired and ready to be home. We had a great two days, saw some incredible places, found some nice boxes and had a wonderful time in the Gila area of New Mexico.Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05828354153419685423noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33779821.post-7745783387202096092018-04-06T12:47:00.003-06:002018-04-06T12:47:48.796-06:00Just Jack in Arroyo Hondo Open SpaceA week ago I made plans with Agent 86 to go on a hike. I asked him to pick the place, day and time. He decided on today at Arroyo Hondo Open Space.

There is one letterbox hidden there - Harry's Roadhouse by ArnoldZiffel. I decided to carve a stamp and make a box to plant in the area on the hike today. So I worked the last two days and came up with an image and box and now I was ready to plant the box.

I met Agent 86 at the Lower Trailhead Parking around 8:30am. We headed out on the trail and decided to hike in a clockwise direction following the outside loop. About three quarters of a mile along the trail we came to a three seciton wooden fence. We stopped here and I decided to hide Just Jack in this area. I easily found a nice hiding spot and took a little time to jot down some notes so that I could write up the clues when I got home. From here we continued our hike around the loop making our way back to the cars.

This is a great hike with some nice views and I enjoyed the morning solitude.
So I added letterboxing to my list of things to do. So after running all my errands this morning I headed over to the Spur Trail near the Community College. I parked and then read the clues and found where I needed to start to find the nine box series planted by ArnoldZiffel and Agent 86 called Dusty. I followed the clues to the first box and quickly found it. I sat on the edge of the trail to stamp in and who should show up - Agent 86. We visited for a bit and made plans to go hiking on Friday and then he continued on his bike ride and I finished stamping in to the first box. This box is the only one with a logbook, the rest of the boxes just have stamps. And, I was the first finder of the series. So I continued up the trail, following the clues and stamping the images into my logbook. Thankfully, the trail was quiet and I didn't have to worry about someone seeing me nabbing the boxes. I spent about half an hour gathering the images and enjoyed my walk along the trail. I really enjoyed the series, very clever - thanks ArnoldZiffel and Agent 86.Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05828354153419685423noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33779821.post-59019502074061615392018-03-31T21:23:00.002-06:002018-03-31T21:23:41.234-06:00Abiquiu and the Chama ValleyAround 7:15am Thomas and I left Santa Fe and headed north for a day trip. We decided to take a drive to Abiquiu and up to Chama and do some letterboxing along the way. The drive through Pojoaque, Espanola and up to Abiquiu was peaceful and quiet. We stopped at Bode's General Store for some snacks and a quick break. Then we continued on and turned off US84 onto FR151 and drove 13 miles to Christ in the Desert Monastery. We parked near the guesthouse and then walked up the road toward the monastery. Just after passing the guesthouse we turned onto a dirt path and walked down to the Rio Chama. At this point we looked for Archangel Raphael at Monastery of Christ in the Desert by Kit. This was a quick and easy find and we sat near the river while stamping in. After the box was back in place we walked a little along the river and then headed back to the car and back towards US84. About five miles from the highway we stopped at the Big Eddy Boat Take-Out and took another walk along the river. After our walk it was time to get back onto US84 and continue our drive.

Our next stop was only about a mile and a half up the road at Echo Amphitheater. We turned in, paid our fee and parked. Then we went in search of War and Peace by RNR. This was a short walk and an easy find. I took the box to a picnic table to stamp in. When I finished stamping in and put the box back in its hiding spot Thomas and I walked the rest of the way to the amphitheater. We did the requisite echo-ing and just sat and relaxed for a bit. After about 15 minutes we headed back to the car and continued on. We didn't stop again until we reached Chama. Once in town we decided to stop for some lunch. We ended up eating at High Country Restaurant. Our lunch was delicious and we had a nice and relaxing time. An hour later it was time to complete our trip and start our drive home. The next box we looked for was Cumbres and Toltec by ArnoldZiffel and it was hidden just a short distance from the restaurant at the Visitor Center. We parked and I went around back, found the junipers and the box. I took it back to the car to stamp in. Once I had stamped in and replaced the box we drove on to the last box of the day. We took US64 west heading for Dulce. About eight miles or so from Chama we arrived at an historical marker for the Continental Divide. We parked here and I looked for and easily found Dulce Great Divide Alien Breeder Vats by Wronghat. Again, I stamped in at the car. When the box was back in place it was time to head home.

We had a great day trip. It was an incredibly beautiful New Mexico day in Abiquiu and the Chama Valley and we thoroughly enjoyed our drive. The trip back home was uneventful and quick. Thanks to all who planted boxes in that area - we loved them all.
I am staying in Sierra Vista and the event is in Sonoita. Before heading to the 14th Annual Tucson Gathering: It's "Comic"-al event I wanted to get some letterboxes outside of the event area. So I decided to leave early so I had enough time to get those boxes and then make it to the event on time.

I had my things ready and was in the car by 6:30am. I left Sierra Vista on AZ92 and then turned onto AZ90 and followed this highway to Huachuca City. Once in the city I stopped at an historic marker to look for One For the Boys by Desert Flower. The box was located about 50 yards from the marker even with a mile marker sign. So I parked there instead of at the marker. I easily found the box and brought it back to the car to stamp in. While I was sitting there a cop pulled up along side of me and asked if I needed help. I told him I was okay and had just needed to stop to make a call and I held up my phone. That satisfied him and he headed off. I finished stamping in and then replaced the box and continued on my drive to Sonoita. I continued on AZ90 to Whetstone and then took AZ82 heading west. When I reached Sonoita I turned onto AZ83 and headed north to the turnoff for Las Cienegas National Conservation Area. I drove into the area and began my search for five boxes . . . D is for Deer, F is for Frog, M is for Mosquito, R is for Raven and P is for Prairie Dog - all by FamilyTreeShaker. While I was at the first box a car pulled up and stopped but didn't stay, they just stared for a bit. Then I headed to the second box and here I met up with that car again. Turned out to be Lee from leeandnancy and CherryOnTop. We visited for a short time and they headed out and I needed to finish the two boxes at this spot. Once I had stamped into these two and replaced them I headed out to find the last two. I had no problems finding them and I didn't run into anyone else. Now that I was finished with all the boxes in this area I headed for the event.

The event was being held at Kentucky Camp off of AZ83. The camp is about five or so miles from AZ83 on a well maintained dirt road. When I first turned off of AZ83 there was a pullout on the right, so I stopped and read the clues for a couple of boxes that I remembered to be located before the camp. The first box was at a pullout on the left. So I drove up the road a bit and parked. I tried following the clues but they didn't work, so I gave up thinking I could stop again after the event. I continued on the road until I came to a split and then pulled off again to look for a second box. I followed the clues but didn't find the box. Then I read the clues again and there was another clue at the parking area for the camp. I guess they moved the box but didn't remove the first spot. Anyway, when I arrived at the parking area I easily found Kentucky Camping by blacksheep 1&2. After stamping in and replacing the box I started gathering my things to walk down the road to the camp. At this time Lee and CherryOnTop showed up. They told me about two more boxes in the parking area. So the three of us searched for and found Kentucky Bird in Arizona by Azroadie and Arizona Wild Things: J by Desert Flower. Once we were done with these two boxes we all gathered our things and started down the road. The event planners placed a series of four boxes along the road as a treat for having to walk from the parking area. We found Veronica, Archie, Betty and Jughead from the Archie Series. At the camp there was one more box for the series - the logo. Now that this series was completed I could meet a few people and visit with old friends. I also got the event stamp and some clues of boxes that had just been placed that morning. Then I found a quiet spot to map things out. Boxes were hidden on the Arizona Trail that runs through the camp and on another trail at the camp and at various spots around the buildings. I decided to hike the Arizona Trail and get the boxes out there first and then return to the camp to finish things up. I followed the trail and found the six boxes in the Dick Tracy series. Sometime during this series I bumped into Wronghat, Kaw and RNR. When I finished this series I picked up the next series and continued on. This was the Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? series. There were six boxes in this series with the last box being at the top of a hill where you were rewarded with some incredible views. When I finished this series I returned the way I came and when I reached a certain spot I began a third series of five boxes. This was the Peanuts Gang Visits Arizona series of five boxes. I was working backwards on this series so I found the last box first. And then when I went to look for the fourth box I bumped into ggghiker and EdieSoCal. They were stamping into Got a Quarter? by the man with no name. They invited me to join them and then when that box was replaced we all looked for the fourth box in the Peanuts series. I found the box and we all stamped in. They continued on to the fifth box and headed in the opposite direction for the third box. I then bumped into Dawgdok. After visiting for a few minutes I continued on and finished the Peanuts series.

I then returned to the camp and got something to eat and also got a couple of exchanges and personal travelers. I also found Celebrating Leprechaun, The Rose & Le Pew and Lil' Abners: Spiderman. After this Lee, CherryOnTop and I headed to the other trail and went in search of two series and a single box. We found five boxes in the Favorite Comic Series by Wisconsin Hiker, and eight boxes in the Guardian of the Galaxy Series by Trishee and Steve Canyon by Martini Man. It was a nice hike and some nice boxes. We then returned to the camp and visited for a little while. Then it was time for me to head out since I had about an hour's drive back to Sierra Vista.

On the way out I stopped again for the box at the beginning of the road - this time I realized my mistake and found the right pullout and easily found Ghost of the Forest by Waneta Wench. Now it was time to get back to the hotel, take a shower and relax. I had eaten before leaving the camp so I didn't need to stop for food. Once back at the hotel I showered and then decided to get some things packed. I am ready to head home. So after logging some finds and then packing most of my things I wanted to get this post done. Now I am ready for the morning to head home. I had a great time in southeastern Arizona and the event was so much fun!Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05828354153419685423noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33779821.post-65504522849666025142018-03-16T21:04:00.000-06:002018-04-02T15:19:04.080-06:00Coronado and Sierra VistaThe plans for today include visiting another National Park Unit and doing some letterboxing in the area. After getting my things together and having some breakfast I was ready to begin my day. I left Sierra Vista heading south on AZ92 and made my way to Coronado National Memorial. As I entered the park I noticed a car stopped in the road facing my direction. As I got closer I saw why they were stopped. There was a covey of about nine quail crossing the road. I took a few pictures while waiting for them to clear the road. The funny thing was that they were not scared by the cars and took their time crossing. Once they had all left the road I continued my drive to the Visitor Center. The first thing I did at the Visitor Center was to ask the Ranger what kind of quail I had seen. He told me they were Montezuma Quail and that it is rare to see them and that birders come from all over to try and see them. He said they were specific to this area. So I was really lucky to have seen them so easily. Next I got my passport stamps, some postcards and a patch. Then I talked to the Ranger about some hikes and got a map of the park. I also got the Junior Ranger booklet so I could work on that while I was exploring and hiking. I left the Visitor Center and drove up the road, which changed from paved to dirt about half way up, to Montezuma Pass Overlook. From there I hiked to Coronado Peak which provided 360° views of the area. After a short stay at the top I hiked back down and then took Joe's Canyon Trail and hiked about a mile or so then stopped for a break and then turned around and headed back to my car. Then I drove back down the road and made a stop at the parking area for the Cave Trail. I hiked the three quarters of a mile to the cave but didn't go in - I didn't have any flashlights so I wouldn't have been able to see anything. Once back at the car I made my way back to the Visitor Center and then hiked a mile or so on Joe's Canyon Trail from the opposite end of where I was earlier. After my hikes I returned to the Visitor Center and finished working on my Junior Ranger booklet. Then I went and talked with the Ranger about the booklet and got my Junior Ranger badge. I also got a pin for I Hike For Health. I ended up hiking about six miles in the park. Now it was time to leave the park and do a little letterboxing.

So I left Coronado NM and headed back toward Sierra Vista. From AZ92 I turned onto Ramsey Canyon Road and then made my way to Brown Canyon Ranch. Here I looked for Angiosperm:Dicot:Populus fremontii by Desert Flower. This was a quick and easy find and once I had stamped in and replaced the box I spent a little time walking around the place. Then I left the Ranch and headed back into Sierra Vista and took AZ90 to the San Pedro House and the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area. I went on a mile or so hike to find San Pedro River by Azroadie. I had a little trouble finding this one. My compass pointed me about 30° from where I needed to be. But with some persistence and patience I found the box and stamped in. Then I made my way back to my car to make one last stop for the day. I got back on AZ90 and turned onto Moson Road and made my way to Murray Springs Clovis Site. I hiked the loop trail and looked for Stoney Point by Merlin and Ardea. I had trouble finding the interpretive sign mentioned in the clue. So I didn't find the box. And I didn't feel like hiking the loop again. So I returned to my car and decided to call it a day.
My FitBit told me I had walked/hiked eight and a half miles today. I stopped and picked up a sandwich for dinner and then headed to the hotel. After I showered and relaxed for a bit I ate my sandwich, logged in my finds and then wrote this post. Now it is time to get some sleep - tomorrow is event day!
